I have learned so much in my search to heal from my injuries and in my mission to create a healthy lifestyle. When you are in pain you are willing to try just about anything to make it stop. So, I researched and tried many things, one of which is Yoga. With the use of Yoga I was able to relive pain, add flexibility and find a deeper connection with myself.

I always thought Yoga was for skinny, flexible people, mostly hippies who liked to tie themselves in knots. I avoided it, even when others told me I would love it. After my accident I had been doing physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy. That only got me so far, so after about a year I began to look into alternative ways of healing and I decided to try Yoga.

My healing journey brought me to the Muskegon Yoga Center. I practiced as many days as I could and still continue to do so. As a result my muscle strength and flexibility have improved, as well as the connection with my body and my soul. I went there to reduce my pain and increase my flexibility, but I gained an amazing connection with myself.

What is Yoga?

Yoga means “union” in Sanskrit. This refers to the union between the body, mind and spirit. It is the practice of physical poses, breathing and meditation. The poses and breathing are designed to prepare the body for meditation. No one knows when Yoga began, but it is found in stone carvings that go back over 5,000 years. There are over a hundred different schools of Yoga.

Who Can Practice Yoga?

Anyone of any age, sex, religion and fitness level can practice Yoga. It can be modified to any fitness level, is a non-competitive form of exercise and can be learned at any pace. Yoga is not a religion and it’s practice will not conflict with any religion. It is based on looking inward and learning about yourself. It is not influenced by external sources.

What Can Yoga Do For Me?

Yoga has many physical, mental and spiritual benefits. I can be used as a tool to lose weight, gain confidence or increase performance.

    I finally tried yoga a few years back. Like you I avoided it. I was an athlete, but also an over-trainer with limited flexibility. It was hard for me but I came to enjoy it, especially the mental break. It’s been awhile since I’ve taken a class but I certainly understand the benefits and look to return sometime soon.

    I love yoga. My favorite is Anusara. I started with Bikram and now do whatever calls to me. I love Vinyasa and I’m hoping to go to Dharma Mittra in NYC on Wed night. In fact, I’m going to make it happen it’s such a rad class.

  3. Thanks for sharing this Heather. When I was diagnosed with MS, there were a few things I intuitively knew I had to start doing. Yoga was one of them. I did it every day for about 3 months. My practice isn’t as disciplined anymore but I found it incredibly healing, not only physically but emotionally. Thanks for helping spread the word.

    Thank you so much for this article. Seriously I wish all highschool teams did some kind of yoga practice in their workout schedule. Hopefully soon. I like that it’s becoming more and more mainstream – not that there is anything wrong with hippies! 🙂

    I LOVE yoga, my sister is a yoga teacher and every year I join her yoga retreats – from California to Mexico. I want to start my own home practice, I think it will be more fulfilling for me to realize that my 20 years of yoga experience can be done at home, alone! I need to trust my inner yoga teacher by now! I have tried them all – Asthanga, Bikram, Kundalini, Anusara, Iyengar, and even Yoga Dance. I like the basics, the simple ease of a triangle, the cat pose. Downward dog. The way I write, you would think I practice every day!

    I would love to be more committed to doing Yoga, years ago I was practicing it pretty regularly and then it just fell my the wayside. I like it, actually, for a while there i was doing namaste yoga, very relaxing. I should probably get back on it again. Thanks for the reminder of the great benefits of doing yoga!

  7. It’s funny – I had wanted to try yoga for years. When I finally did, I just could not get into the “rhythm” of it – it was like my internal pace was completely out of synch with the pace of yoga. I tried it again several months later, but with a different type. That made all the difference. I now do yoga nearly every day – a regular routine that helps me stretch first thing in the morning. I do this whether I am doing other strenuous exercise or on a rest day. It makes a huge difference in my posture, my flexibility and my stress levels. Thanks for helping me remember all of the other benefits too!

    • Susan, I’m glad I inspired you! There is no such thing as being too big to do yoga. Or too old, too young, too inflexible. That is the beauty of it. It is your practice and can be whatever you want. I have seen people start a yoga class for the first time in a chair because they couldn’t get up and down off the floor. It is amazing to see them progress to not needing the chair anymore. It’s an amazing modality and has many great benefits. I hope you enjoy it! 😉

    I love this post, prolly because I love yoga. I remember first starting thinking that maybe I shouldn’t because I wasn’t thin enough lol. Oh, and it works beautifully with Thai Massage. In 2002 I was certified as a Bikram Yoga teacher, and I have seen yoga help 1000s of people in the most amazing ways!

    Hi! I’m just a beginner in Yoga. I was shocked to compare my level of flexibility with the one of my teacher. It’s like we are from different planets. However, I see slow but steady progress by each lesson, so I’m happy about starting this journey!
