I have learned so much in my search to heal from my injuries and in my mission to create a healthy lifestyle. When you are in pain you are willing to try just about anything to make it stop.

So, I researched and tried many things, one of which is Meditation.

If you would have asked me a few years ago about meditation, I would have said only New Age hippies, weird spiritual people and people in cults meditate. I had no use for it in my life, or so I thought.

My first introduction to mediation was in a yoga class that ended with a short meditation in Savasana (lying on your back). I decided to take yoga to increase my flexibility and heal from my accident. What I found is that I benefited most from the relaxation and spiritual aspect of yoga. Who knew?

Meditation dates back to ancient times and although it can be found in many religions, it is not religious. It is a state of mind or a technique in which you release thought and focus inward and quiet your mind. It is an act of letting go of the past, not thinking about the future, being present without thought.

There is no right or wrong way to meditate. There is no right or wrong time to meditate. And there is no right or wrong place to meditate. There are many benefits to mediation, the most common are relaxation and to stress reduction.

I usually meditate lying down because it is more comfortable for me, but you can meditate in any position you choose. I use guided meditation recordings to help me focus on a specific thing I am trying to achieve, sleep, clarity, intuition, balance, creativity, etc. There are many free guided mediations on iTunes. My favorite is the Meditation Oasis. I also use TMeditation Station, The Meditation Podcast, Zenworlds ZenCast and Relaxation Meditation Podcast. Download a few and try them out. You will soon find your favorites.

I meditate every night for 20 minutes right before I go to bed using a guided meditation for sleep. I find that I fall asleep instantly, sleep well throughout the night and wake up well rested. I also meditate during the day for 20 minutes using a guided meditation that applies to something I am trying to achieve that day like clarity or creativity.

Meditation is extremely safe and drug-free. The only side effects are feeling calm and relaxed. I highly recommend it if you are having trouble controlling pain with “traditional” medical treatments.

    Thank you, Heather for the iTunes meditation recommendations – I have been getting much better about incorporating meditation into my day (which also started with my yoga practice – LOVE yoga!). And I also enjoy a good walking meditation. I used to use knitting as a form of meditation, but haven’t picked that up in years, you may have just inspired me to do so. Thanks again!

    • You’re welcome Sheila! I LOVE Yoga too. It was a very important part of my recovery. I am looking for some guided walking meditation recordings. I found one, but haven’t tried it. I’m glad that I was able to inspire you! 😉

    Yes!! I totally agree with the benefits of meditation and that final savasana of yoga class is one of my favorite times. I don’t incorporate meditation into my day to day life as much as I should….but you’ve reminded me of how much it serves me, so I will definitely make the effort to meditate outside of yoga class over the next little while. 🙂

    I love yoga, but I’m not much of a mediator. It just hasn’t worked for me. But, you have convinced me to give it a try again. Will look into those guided meditations recordings and see how it goes. Thanks Heather for teaching us how to lead healthier lives.

    • Yvette, give it another try. The trick is to just let yourself go and not try to get anything out of it. Don’t get wrapped up in trying to control your thoughts. If you start to drift off into your thoughts just bring your attention back to your breathing. It takes practice, but is well worth it. Let me know how it goes. Enjoy! 😉

    Savasana was my first introduction to mediation, too. I’ve struggled with keeping a regular meditation practice going until the last month or so. Something finally clicked and I’ve been meditation each morning for 15 min. Thanks for the recommendations for guided meditation. I’m going to check those out!

    • Christie, something clicked recently for me too. I have been able to consistently meditate for 25 minutes before bed. I also have been meditating most days for about 20 minutes. I’m glad you liked the recommendations. Thanks for your comments. 😉

    Thank you so much for this list of podcasts. I was familiar with Meditation Oasis but none of the others. I’m a casual mediatator–a couple times/week. But it’s becoming really apparent that I need to step it back up and start practicing more regularly.

  7. WOW this is powerful stuff. As one who just cannot still my own mind for any reason I completely appreciate what you are saying. To have a full night sleep is better than winning the lottery 😉 I will absolutely try this and many thanks for the list of podcasts which can guide me through morning, mid day or evening meditation rituals. LOVE.

  8. Love the iTunes recommendations – I find that I do so much better in meditating when I have at least music if not guidance. That said, I still struggle to do it regularly – quieting the mind has so many benefits and yet can be a bit challenging (even though that is the whole point!).

    For me, journaling is a huge help in this area – and find that I am much better at meditating in conjunction with the writing than I am when trying to meditate only. With the new resources you gave, I am willing to jump back on the wagon because I know that the benefits are plentiful.

    I did a bit of research around stress relief last week and just learned all of the crazy amazing benefits of meditation… I’m trying my darndest to integrate this as a daily practice. So hard for me.

    • Thanks for your honesty Amber. It can be hard to integrate meditation into your life as a daily practice. If you do it as often as you can, you will naturally build up to wanting to do it daily because of the benefits you receive. As with anything you are try to make part of your routine, just take baby steps. Good luck! 😉

  10. WonderFULL, Heather! thank you for this list of these resources. I am going to work with the night meditation. I have been working late and thus my energy is on right up to the end… particularly my thinking function. And thus takes long to calm it down. I remember that the times I have used meditation, I have fallen asleep effortlessly. Going to try the others you suggest to! Thank you for this resource!

    • Ah Kathleen, I know how you feel about trying to shut the thinking off at the end of the day. I think the guided meditation will help. Try not to get wrapped up into controlling your thoughts. Bring your attention back to your breathing once you have found yourself drifting into thought. As you repeat this process you will eventually end up letting you thoughts go by without engaging in them. I suggest the Deep Rest Guided Meditation on the Meditation Oasis Podcast for right before going to bed. It is my favorite. Good luck! 😉
