How to Create a Healthy Home – Aerosols…

Your Journey Toward a Healthy Lifestyle Begins
in Your Home and in Your Body.

You are focused on being healthy, but are you aware of the
hidden dangers that lurk in your home?

PROBLEM:

Aerosol sprays end up in the air around you when you use them. As you breathe they are inhaled into your lungs. This is the fastest way to absorb something into the bloodstream, besides injecting it into the veins.

Air fresheners are the worst aerosol products in your bathroom. Many air fresheners contain chemicals known as phthalates. Phthalates are dangerous and have been linked to causing hormone imbalance and birth defects.

SOLUTION:

Eliminate this chemical exposure by eliminating all aerosol products in your home.

Natural Alternatives to Air Fresheners:
  • White Vinegar: safe, natural, odor-neutralizing bacteria.
  • Essential Oils: safe, natural, pure.
  • Citrus Peels: strong, long-lasting natural smell.
  • Plants: natural air purifier, absorb harmful chemicals, natural and pure.
Create-Your-Own Essential Oil Air Freshener Spray:
Use your favorite essential oils and create a safe alternative
    to aerosol air-fresheners.

  • Pour 1 tsp witch hazel into a pump spray bottle.
  • Add 10-20 drops essential oil and shake well.
  • Add water to fill.
  • Shake bottle before each use.

Oh dear. I knew by the title of this post I was in trouble. Someone is in the other room cleaning the bathroom as I write this and I guarantee its not vinegar and water, and since that is going on, I escaped to the deck, where the neighbors are spray painting their house (ie painting the house using a sprayer) and I am sure that the benefits of sitting outside are heavily outweighed by whatever paint might be attaching itself to my lungs as I speak. Thanks for the reminder, now it’s a matter of putting what I know into action!

    • Thanks for the great comments Laura! These suggestions are to make you aware, which I obviously have done. They are also to get you to avoid the chemicals in (and around) your home and finding healthy alternatives. You could start with the make your own air freshener I suggested. I made them for my home and plan to make them for family too. 😉

  3. Jenny Shih says:

I love homemade essential oil sprays! Thanks for the reminder. Mine often migrates to drawers and cupboards but I’m going to grab it right now and freshen up my office.

  4. Yvette says:

OMG – I didn’t know you could do your own air freshner!! Thank you so much for sharing this information. who knew. Need to go shopping for the ingridients my hubby will love me for this too, he hates those aerosols.

  5. Lea says:

I absolutely hate Aerosol sprays. Never liked them, I’m glad you posted exactly why I should dislike them even more 🙂

Oooo and thanks for the DIY alternatives! I’ll have to experiment with
those…I have used the Citrus Peels that is my favorite!

I agree totally! Essential oil sprays all the way. This is a great resource for me and I look forward to reading more of your Healthy Home series. We really need to be aware of this. Thank you!

  7. Your post made me smile because it reminded me of my mom. She cannot stand chemical smells. During my Aqua Net phase in high school I would have to go outside to poof up my bangs.

    • Christie, your mom’s nose is right. Your nose will tell you if something contains chemicals that are harmful. Some people are more sensitive than others. I love your comments, they made me smile! 😉

  8. Well…the aerosols have been gone for awhile, but I have no doubt that my standard solid air fresheners are an issue. Love the suggestions you gave for making your own! I probably won’t do the live plants, though…too much of a brown thumb. Those essential oils and citrus peels? Those are now on my list.

    • Jennifer, I don’t do well with live plants. I do ok with Jade plants, but barely. I’m glad you liked my do-it-yourself ideas. You really should replace the solid air fresheners. You will love the scent of the homemade ones! By the way, citrus peels are great to freshen up your garbage disposal too. 😉
